Already with the babies the time of the sweet little dresses begins. No wardrobe should be complete without the little girl moving in with her family after birth. And if mommies, grannies or aunts reach for a knitting needle, then a baby dress will not be enough.
We join the understandable joy of knitting with a self-knitted baby dress. Our children’s dress is very simple and therefore easy to knit, even for beginners.
The instructions for the baby dress are presented in size 56. This corresponds approximately to a 1-2 month old baby. But this does not mean that you cannot knit this baby dress in the following sizes. The basic pattern always remains the same. You simply knit a few more stitches and more rows in length. The sleeve neckline is always knitted the same way.
For our instructions we have chosen a pattern that is just as suitable for warm days as for cooler ones. The children’s dress consists of a skirt, a bib and straps. So you can wear it on warm days with and without T-shirt. Often only the body under the dress is enough, and the baby looks equally chic. And the long-sleeved shirt also looks very pretty underneath.
To help you, we have created a small pattern for the children’s dress. This pattern shows all centimetres for size 56. For each additional size you have to add 3 centimetres to each length.
Material and preparation
When knitting baby clothes, you should pay particular attention to the wool or yarn you are processing. Babies not only love it soft and cuddly, the yarn should also be light and free of harmful substances.
You can buy special baby wool in wool specialist shops, even online. This wool or yarn is especially designed for the needs of the little ones. For the warm season a soft cotton mixed yarn is suitable, for the cold days there are very cuddly virgin wool yarns, specially for the small baby.
We decided on a summery children’s dress and knitted it with a very soft mixed cotton yarn. Our yarn corresponds to the wool Rico Baby Cotton Soft by Wolle Rödel. It consists of 50 % cotton and polyacrylic. Therefore it is also very easy to clean and wonderfully soft.
We have knitted with a needle size of 3.5 mm.
According to our instructions you need:
130 gram cotton mixed yarn with a barrel length of 230 m/100 gram
2 short needles with needle size 3.5 mm
1 circular knitting needle also with a needle thickness of 3.5 mm
Techniques & Patterns
The children’s dress is knitted in two parts. The front part and the back part. These are sewn together at the end and held together with two knitted straps. The basic pattern consists of right and left stitches – smooth right pattern. In the first row knitting is done on the right, in the second row left stitches are worked.
Small pearl pattern
The straps and the edging on the sleeve cutout as well as on the sewn-on pocket we worked in the pearl pattern.
Always knit alternately:
1 stitch on the right and
1 stitch left.
In the back row, all stitches are knitted in the opposite direction as they appear.
For the stop we have processed a special pattern: the cord stop.
It actually has the character of a cord and brings some momentum into the first row.
We did not invent this special cord stop, but copied it from “Knitting with eliZZZa”. It is very simple, but has a great effect. You have to knit this cord stop with two short knitting needles. Because the knitting work is not turned around, it is only pushed back and forth.
Cast 3 stitches on a short needle. Do not turn the work. To do this, push the work on the needle to the other end of the needle. Now the working thread is on the left side, but this is of no interest. When knitting on, simply bring the thread back to the first stitch behind the work. Do not stitch the first stitch at the back, but at the front.
Knit all three stitches on the right. Push needle to the left again.
In this run knit all 3 stitches always right and push from one end to the other for a new row.
When the desired length has been reached, proceed as follows:
Cast off the first 2 meshes.
The unlinked stitch is the first stitch or edge stitch of the knitting work. Now take a new stitch from each stitch thread (see picture) with the working thread onto the needle. Continue until you have created all the new stitches.
Turn the work around
The stitching was a right row. You now continue knitting with a left row. All left stitches are knitted left cros
Knit all stitches interlaced on the right.
Work all meshes left interlocked. The stitches must be worked interlaced because they stretch very long with normal knitting techniques and result in an unclean stitch pattern. This is the whole art of the cord stop.
A clean edge stitch
How you can knit a clean edge stitch is shown in our magazine: Knitting edge stitches – quickly learned. When it comes to children’s dresses, we have worked all the edge stitches as warp edges.
Baby dress knitting in size 56
You can decide for yourself with which stop you want to start the children’s dress. If you want to use a cord stop, you must knit the cord until you can pick up 72 stitches on a new needle. Then work these 72 stitches exactly as described in the basic pattern.
Continue knitting as described from the 6th row.
Skirt of the dress
With a normal mesh stop, you strike 72 meshes.
Knit up the first 5 rows in a pearl pattern. From the 6th row, the skirt of the children’s dress begins for both strokes.
6. row after the stop
We have changed the yarn colour from this row on. Work up to the 10th row in the basic pattern smooth right.
Row right stitches
Back row left meshes
From the 10th row the removal of the skirt from the dress starts at the right and left edge of the skirt.
The first three takeoffs will follow:
8 centimeters and
12 centimeters made
That’s how you lose weight:
1. lift off mesh
2. knit stitch right
Pull the raised stitch over the knitted stitch.
knit all other stitches to the right
The last two stitches before the edge stitch
knit together on the right
Repeat this decrease a total of 3 times.
Picture mesh marker
After the third inspection:
4 rows normal knitting
Then knit together three more times in every 4th row for the skirt bevel left and right of the knitting work two stitches each on the right (as described at the skirt).
The skirt width of one side is reduced by 5 centimetres by the decreases.
After the last take-off, knit a back and forth row.
Sleeve neckline – the bib
The skirt of the children’s dress is now knitted. We continue with the bib part of the dress.
Here the sleeve cutout is removed. So that it will be a nice visible decrease, we have knitted the first 5 stitches after the edge stitch with a pearl pattern and then removed only.
Now continue knitting in this way:
5 knitting stitches in pearl pattern
1 take off mesh
1 stitch right knit
Pull the raised stitch over the knitted stitch.
Knit with the right stitches up to the 7th and 8th stitches at the needle end.
Knit 2 stitches together on the right.
5 stitches in pearl pattern work
1 edge stitch
In each back row knit the middle part with left stitches. Work the pearl pattern as usual. The take-offs always take place only in the rows with right stitches. Repeat this removal 12 times for the bib of the baby dress.
Then work 7 rows continuously in the pearl pattern. We have knitted these 7 rows with a second yarn colour. On the front side of the dress work 1 buttonhole into this pearl pattern border on the left and right side.
This is how it works:
2 knit stitches
2 knit stitches together
Work in opposite directions on the left side of the border. In the back row, knit the cover normally as a stitch. You must follow the pearl pattern to determine whether the cover becomes a right or left stitch.
After the 7th row of pearl pattern, cast off all stitches. Knit the second part of the baby dress in the same way.
The basic scaffolding for the children’s dress is ready.
Front and back are held together by straps. To do this, knit like this:
7 Stitching on the stitches
Work 5 meshes in pearl pattern
So that the little dress gets its special chic, we have knitted a small pocket on the front.
27 stitches to be beaten
Knit 5 rows in pearl pattern
3 meshes in pearl pattern
knit all other stitches to the right.
At the end of the row work 3 more stitches of pearl pattern.
1 edge stitch
Of course, you can make the bag as big as you want.
Our bag has the dimensions:
10 cm wide
7 centimetres high
After knitting, sew the purse onto the dress with a fine thread at the back of the stitches. You have now finished knitting all the pieces. Before sewing the front and back together, you should sew all loose threads. After sewing the two large knitted pieces together, sew the straps to the back piece.
Sew a button at the end of the straps. However, we did not choose a button that we had bought ready, but a small white flower crocheted as a button. We also crocheted the same flower for the bag and sewed it on.
Of course you can also change the baby dress now. You can also knit the borders larger with the pearl pattern. Instead of sewing on a bag, you can also embroider flowers. Or small beetles. There are no limits to your imagination.
72 Stitches to be cast on
5 rows working in pearl pattern
At centimeters 4 / 8 and 12, take off a loop on the right and left, respectively.
After the last slimming, knit 4 rows normally.
Slacken 3 more times in every 4th row left and right.
Knit 2 rows smooth right.
For the bib at the sleeve neckline, remove 12 times on both sides.
Side stitch – pearl pattern – take off – knit smooth right – take off – pearl pattern – side stitch.
Knit 2 straps in pearl pattern.
Sew to the back and attach 2 buttons.
Knit 1 front pocket.
Crochet and sew on a flower to beautify.
